Checksum error: How to install modules

Sometimes when you try to install new module or upgrade existing one in the admin console, you get an error message:

Checksum error. This probably indicates a corrupt file, either when it was uploaded to the repository, or a problem in transit down to your machine.

This is a very old and known problem in the module repository of CMS Made Simple. You can vote in the forum if you are interested in solving this bug. If you see this message, the only way to install the module is do it manually. This is easy even for non-developers and when you have done it once, you will be able to install any module this way.

To install the module manually you have to know the module name. Imagine that we would like to install the module with the name Guestbook. This is the name that you see on the tab Available modules in admin console (Extensions » Module Manager). Notice the name and go to CMSMS Forge, the place where CMSMS module developers uploads their modules. In the right upper corner you see the search field where you can enter the name of the module in question. If you get a list of the modules, you should look for the module with EXACT the same name you have seen in the list of available modules in admin console.

Click on the module name and switch to the tab Files. This is a list of all files and releases ever uploaded by module developer. You are surely interested in the newest version, therefore you look for the first files in the list with the highest version.

Two types of files can be found in the list: XML and ZIP. You need only one of them depending on what method you choose for manual installation.

Install with XML

Download XML file to your local disc. Go to the admin console and open Extensions » Modules. You will see the list of all modules that are found in your installation. Below the list there is a section Install module via XML file where you can select XML file and click on Submit. The module will be added to the list of modules, however it is not installed yet. Search the module in the list of modules on the same page and find the link Install in the column Action in the same line. Ready. The module is now installed and can be used.

Install with ZIP

If you downloaded ZIP file, you need access to the FTP. Download the file and unpack it to your local disc. Connect to your web space with FTP and upload the module folder into the folder /modules on your web space. After upload go to the admin console and open Extensions » Modules. You will see the list of all modules that are found in your installation. The module uploaded is now added to the list of modules, however it is not installed yet. Find the link Install in the column Action in the same line where the module is found and click it. Ready. The module is installed and can be used.
