How to backup your website

Backup is making copies of your files AND database. You need backup in case of disaster if something goes wrong on your web hosting. The data can be lost due to hosting issues or caused by webmaster mistakes. Therefore it is important to have backup files to be able to restore your website.

To backup CMS website it is not sufficient just to copy all the files. They are only small fraction of your website. The most important is to backup database where all your text and design (except of image files) are stored.

In CMS Made Simple you have 2 modules (one is used for files and one for database). You would not probably able to use the modules on free web hosting or on the hosting with strong restrictions. To check if easy backup of your website with modules described below is possible, try to install the first module to backup files.

Backup website files

In the admin panel select Extensions → Module Manager and choose on the tab "Available modules" the letter "F" above the alphabetical module list. Find FileBackup and click on "Download & Install". If there are restrictions on your web hosting you will get an error:

You cannot use this module, since you don't have tar command installed on your server.

In this case you have to backup your website manually. Use FileZilla to backup files and PHPMyAdmin to backup database.

If the installation of the module FileBackup was successful, you can start to configure it. In the admin panel go to Site Admin -> File Backup. On the tab “Preferences” you see the message “Please check and save the path to tar binaries before using FileBackup.” Normally the path is recognized automatically and you can just press “Save”. If the message does not disappear you have to ask your hosting provider what the path to tar binaries on your web hosting is.

Switch to the tab Backup Files and press “Backup Files”. Wait until a list of folders is complete and the message “Task completed” is found at the end of the list. Below the message you see the backup file containing all your website files and can save it on your local disk. You will find this file and all your future backups with FileZilla in the folder /admin/backups on your web hosting.

Backup database

With next step you backup your database. You need module MySQLDump to make backup from within your admin panel.

In the admin panel select Extensions → Module Manager and choose on the tab "Available modules" the letter "M" above the alphabetical module list. Find MySQLDump and click on "Download & Install".  If there are any restrictions on your web hosting you will get an error:

You cannot use this module, since you don't have MySQL installed on your server

Otherwise the module is installed successfully.

To make first backup go to Site Admin -> MySQL Dump and switch to the tab “Preferences”. Normally the path to mysql binaries is recognized automatically and you can just press “Save”. If you see the message “Invalid path to MySQL utilities” you have to ask your hosting provider for the proper path to mysql binaries on your web hosting.

Switch to the tab “Backup Database” and press “Backup database”. All CMS Made Simple tables are listed and database dump is created at the end of the list. You will find this file and all your future database backups with FileZilla in the folder /admin/backups on your web hosting as well.
